Ultra High Power Graphite Electrodes: The Key to Increased Steel Production

High-power graphite electrodes can be used as conductive heating materials for steelmaking electric arc furnaces of more than 20 tons with a power of 600kVA/t.

First, what is the high-power graphite electrode?

High power graphite electrode is a category of graphite electrode, in addition to ordinary graphite electrode and ultra-high power graphite electrode; The graphite electrode is mainly used for steelmaking, and the graphite electrode rod is inserted into the steelmaking electric furnace to play a heating role, and it is a expendable product during the heating process.

The high-power graphite electrode mainly uses high-quality petroleum coke, asphalt coke raw materials, and coal pitch as bonding agents, and needle-coke needs to be added (ordinary graphite electrodes do not need to be added); After calcining, batching, mixing… Machined, etc. (production flow chart below), and with two electrodes led out of the joint.

High power graphite electrode due to the use of high-quality petroleum coke and other raw materials, and the electrode local need to be impregnated, so the price of high power graphite electrode is more than 1/3 expensive than ordinary graphite electrode, which leads to its high physical and mechanical properties relative to ordinary power graphite electrode, lower resistivity and allow through the current flow is larger, used in metallurgical industry such as refined steel.

Graphite electrodes are divided into three types according to the power of the electric furnace and the current density it allows: ordinary power graphite electrodes, high power graphite electrodes and ultra-high power graphite electrodes; the other is anti-oxidation coated graphite electrodes.

  1. When using high-power graphite electrodes, the current allowed is between 18 and 25 A/cm2, which is used in high-power electric arc furnaces for high-precision steelmaking.
  2. The allowable current of ordinary graphite electrodes is less than 17A/per square centimeter during use, and is used in ordinary power electric furnaces such as steel making, glass making, and yellow phosphorus making.
  3. The ultra-high power graphite electrode is allowed to pass electricity greater than 25A/per square centimeter during use, and is used in ultra-high power electric arc furnaces for high-precision steelmaking.
  4. Anti-oxidation graphite electrodes are coated with anti-oxidation protective coating materials on the surface to form a high-temperature and oxidation-resistant protective layer, thereby reducing the consumption of beams. Anti-oxidation coatings can also be used in all three types of graphite electrode categories. Anti-oxidation coating can reduce steel-making electrode consumption by 19% to 50% and extend the service life of graphite electrodes by 22% to 60%.
